Preservation of the Commons: Responsibilities of the Institutions

Aspiring to return ancient grains to their 'centre of origin', the Seed Journey set up by Futurefarmers began in September 2016 in Oslo on an 1895 Colin Archer sailboat, and concluded on September 2017 in Istanbul. During this long, emblematic project Futurefarmers hosted workshops, engaged with local communities, and created opportunities to consider together the interrelationship between food production and the realms of knowledge sharing, cultural production, socio-political formations and everyday life. The crew's research and combined knowledge were narrated through an installation of sourced and produced materials, which was housed in the treasury found inside SALT Research at SALT Galata, as part of The Uses of Art: Final Exhibition.

Futurefarmers' Amy Franceschini was in dialogue with Aslıhan Demirtaş, an active member of the Initiative for the Protection of the Historical Yedikule Gardens in Istanbul. They discussed the global and local aspects of the struggle for the preservation of the commons. The roles of institutions are also addressed based on the various encounters the speakers have had with them as practitioners.
