Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes

Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of Amsterdam. Until 2014 she was Professor of Iconology in Belfast, where she led a Research Graduate School. Originating from Jena, she studied in Heidelberg, London and Cologne, where she gained her PhD. She was also a Joyce Foundation Scholar in Zurich. She was postdoc at UCDublin and lived in Ireland for 20 years.

Her books include: W.G. Sebald’s Artistic Legacies: Memory, Word and Image (co-ed., 2023); Brian O’Doherty/Patrick Ireland: Word, Image and Institutional Critique (ed., 2018); Post-War Germany and ‘Objective Chance’: W.G. Sebald, Joseph Beuys and Tacita Dean (Steidl, 2011), and Joyce in Art (2004). She has curated internationally.
